Computational notebooks such as those provided by Jupyter, R markdown notebooks and Matlab represent an important step forward for reproducibility. They have become a hugely successful mechanism for sharing the analysis of data and have spread into a wide variety of different applications and use cases including teaching and publishing. During this talk I will identify the scope of notebooks, point out their limitations from a software perspective and map out their use cases through a survey carried out last year. Finally, I will discuss initial steps on how notebooks could be preserved and made FAIR, at least in terms of it being used for sharing analysis.
