Lancaster University Engineering Building has won recognition in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Regional Awards.

Chosen from a shortlist of 15, the new Engineering Building was praised by the judges for its ‘careful detailing, strategy and quality.’

The eco-building also won the Sustainability Award, reflecting the University’s commitment to reduce its carbon emissions. Since 2004 the University has won several environmental awards for its new and refurbished buildings, which are all designed to operate more sustainably.

The RIBA Regional Awards are given to buildings across the UK recognised as important contributions to architecture.

Mark Swindlehurst, the Director of Facilities, said: “It is great that the high-quality of the building has been recognised by these two RIBA Awards. We are very proud of our new Engineering building at Lancaster University. It provides a modern, light, sustainable and inspirational working environment for our students and academics to learn, teach and conduct world-leading research and is a first-rate addition to the fantastic facilities on campus here at Lancaster.”

The project architect, Paul Hughes, of John McAslan + Partners, won the region’s Project Architect of the Year Award.

The building was officially opened on 4 March by the new Chancellor, Alan Milburn, and boasts a world-class environment with specially designed workshops, teaching laboratories and office areas.

The Engineering Building will be put forward for the RIBA National Awards, with the recipients announced in June this year.
