BBC Top Gear presenter and Lancaster University alumnus James May was presented with a special gift when he attended an alumni dinner to mark the end of Lancaster University’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

University Director of Alumni, Development & Events Nick Fragel presented the award-winning TV presenter with a signed copy of a racing car design book written by Emeritus Professor of Engineering at Lancaster University Derek Seward.

“James was really pleased to receive the signed copy of Professor Seward’s book,” said Mr Fragel. “It actually reinforced his desire to come up to Lancaster to visit our brand new Engineering building. He is now trying to fit that into his very busy schedule. He is very proud of his Lancaster University connection.”

‘Race Car Design’ is the title of the new book written by Professor Seward, the former Head of Engineering, who has recently project-managed the department’s move to its new premises.

Race Car Design, Professor Seward’s second book, covers all the essential elements of race car design and demonstrates the important role of computer tools using clear examples and calculations to illustrate both theory and practice in an engaging and accessible style.

James May, best known for appearing on the globally successful Top Gear motoring show with Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson, is the patron of the student motor racing team.

He graduated from Lancaster University in 1985 before working as a subeditor on magazines and then moving into broadcasting.
