Lancaster University’s Engineering Building has received further recognition for the quality of its design.

The building, which opened to staff and students in 2015, has been highly commended by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in the ‘Design through Innovation’ category at their 2016 RICS North West Awards on April 22nd. The category was won by Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool.

Chair of the judging panel for the RICS North West Awards, Will Rees, Director at Rees Straw Chartered Surveyors, in Liverpool, said: “We were impressed with the remarkable calibre of entries this year. Whilst the winners and the highly commended range from unique small scale schemes, through to multi million pound developments, they are all positively contributing to our region and ensuring our cities and towns remain fantastic places to live, work, and visit. The teams behind these projects should be immensely proud of themselves.”

This latest award, collected by Stuart Foy who project managed the creation of the Engineering Building and Professor Malcolm Joyce, former Head of Lancaster University’s Engineering Department, is one of a number of accolades the building has received since opening on 4 March last year – including a National Award, a Sustainability Award British Construction Industry award, and a Regional Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The building boasts state-of-the-art facilities for multi-disciplined engineering, with specially designed workshops and laboratories. It is part of a £450m spend on the University’s campus over the last decade, with a further £135m planned over the next three years.

The building was designed by internationally-renowned architects John McAslan + Partners, and the Lancashire-based company Eric Wright Construction Ltd. were the building contractors.
