Assessing Learning, Not Just Code: Integrating Generative AI into Programming Coursework at Scale: Onur Ascigil - Lecturer Computer Science

This presentation followed by Q and A will explore the challenge that Generative AI enables students to produce high-quality programming solutions with minimal effort, which raises concerns about whether programming coursework still reflects genuine learning, particularly in large cohorts. In this work, we propose a process-aware approach in which students, alongside their final code artefacts, submit their full record of AI interactions with a university-provided LLM (e.g., Lancaster SAIL) to support equitable access. To support scalable assessment, we propose that students select and timestamp a small number of key moments and briefly annotate what they learned at each point, alongside a record of how their work developed over time (using a version control system such as Git). By checking the consistency between these annotated moments in the interaction record and the documented evolution of students’ work, the approach aims to support scalable verification of learning without requiring detailed manual review of complete AI logs.

Understanding and Creating a Sense of Belonging - Jessie Whaite, Evaluation and Impact Officer

A sense of belonging is essential for student success and staff engagement within the university. This interactive session will examine the meaning of belonging in higher education, its importance, and its impact on outcomes across the student lifecycle. Participants will have the chance to reflect on their personal sense of belonging at Lancaster University and consider how the current climate may be influencing it. Through collaborative activities, we will identify barriers to belonging and develop strategies to enhance it across the university.
