Lancaster has a flexible approach to undergraduate study. Many students choose to study Chinese, French, German, Italian or Spanish in the first year of their studies, either at intensive or advanced level.

We offer flexible programmes, both within our School and in collaboration with 14 other subjects across the University. You can study a wide range of degree schemes in Chinese, French, German, and Spanish from beginners and advanced levels, and Italian from beginner level.

Study three languages chosen from Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
We normally require you to have one A Level and either one A level or an AS Level in two of our major languages (Chinese, French, German and Spanish). The third language can be studied from beginners' or post-GCSE level if you wish. Please note Italian can only be taken as beginners' languages and as a minor.

Lancaster has a flexible approach to undergraduate study and we offer a dynamic environment for study with a wide variety of degree combinations with non-language subjects. These degree schemes are feature of Lancaster’s innovative approach to higher education and are very popular.

We are one of the best-established centres in the UK for Italian.
We can cater for students with GCSE Italian and for complete beginners but please note that we do not offer advanced - post A/AS level - Italian.

Lancaster’s MLang degree is a selective and accelerated programme enabling you to achieve an MA in one or two languages and related studies in four years. It is taught by the Department of Languages and Cultures and includes an international study placement in year 2.

Each year, we ward a number of prizes to our undergraduate students.
Spending a year abroad is an integral and assessed part of our language degrees. We offer flexibility to split your time abroad between different activities. It gives you the opportunity to improve your language proficiency, broaden your cultural knowledge and gain transferable skills that are much valued by employers.
The International Placement Year is compulsory for students taking Chinese, French, German or Spanish at major level. Please note that there is no placement year for Italian.
