Professor Bruce Hollingsworth has been invited to join the World Health Organisation's 13th General Programme of Work (GPW 13) Metrics Taskforce from 2019-2023. This is under the auspices of the WHO Expert Reference Group, established by the WHO Director-General.

Through GPW 13, the WHO will measure its results and describe its contribution to achieving outcomes and impact.

In response to the challenge to leave no-one behind, GPW 13 sets goals of 1 billion people for each of its three strategic priorities, which are aimed at the most vulnerable people.

Professor Hollingsworth from the Faculty of Health and Medicine is a health economist.

He said: “This truly international Task Force is proposing methods and approaches to actually measure progress towards these seemingly amazing targets. Given the size of the task a whole new framework has had to be developed, with the main aim always borne in mind – improving health through striving for each of the targets.”

The Taskforce will help shape the analytical methods of the triple billion goals, GPW targets and indicators, and will recommend partnerships to strengthen measurement.

The triple billion goals aim to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for everyone at all ages with:

· A billion more people benefiting from universal health coverage

· A billion more people better protected from health emergencies

· A billion more people enjoying better health and well-being

The Taskforce will also work with the WHO Secretariat to meet these objectives.
