Hosted by the Northern Legal History Group, and the third event in our 2023/24 lecture series. We are delighted to welcome Sir Rupert Jackson who will be addressing the question 'What Do We Know About Law in Roman Britain?'.
From the Druidic judges of pre-Roman Britain onward, the lecture will recount the fascinating history and spread of Roman Law and Roman lawyers across the province of Britannia. Drawing on archaeology, epigraphy, and written sources, Sir Rupert's talk will explore how Roman Law was implemented by, and shaped, the political and social structures of Roman Britain, over nearly four centuries of Roman rule. The talk will include a short Q+A, followed by drinks.
Sir Rupert Jackson is an eminent lawyer, former lord justice of appeal, and historian. Sir Rupert is also the author of "The Roman Conquest of Britain and its Legacy" (Bloomsbury, 2020) all profits from which go to support the work of Classics for All, a charity which promotes and funds the teaching of classics in state schools.
