The results of the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) are in, and the Department of History is pleased to announce that our research has been recognized for its power, quality and impact.

The publications colleagues in the Department have produced have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to the discipline of History, with 87% of our research being rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.

The value of our research for local communities and for the heritage sector, both nationally and internationally, has been rated especially highly.

We pride ourselves on the outstanding impact and very considerable reach and significance of our academic work. These are a core part of our culture, and our achievements in these areas complement our wider commitment to yielding real-world benefits both through our research and through the placements and internships we provide our students.

Professor Ian Gregory, Head of Department, said: ‘Our results reflect the hard work of colleagues across the Department. I am proud that their excellent research has been recognized in this way, and I am also proud of the benefits we bring to the communities with whom we work. Going forward, we are in a strong position to build on this success.’
