Beyond the Single Stream: Neural Dynamics of Speech Segmentation Across Two Artificial Streams

How does the brain extract words from continuous speech in complex, multilingual environments? Moving beyond traditional single-language paradigms, this talk explores the neural and behavioral mechanisms of speech segmentation across two artificial streams in monolingual and early Catalan-Spanish bilingual adults. By measuring real-time neural entrainment alongside behavioral tasks as listeners process two phonetically overlapping artificial languages, we investigate how linguistic background influences the capacity to track competing regularities in a simulated bilingual context. Specifically, the presentation will examine whether early bilingual experience affects listeners' capacity to extract words from both streams, or if listeners experience entrenchment effects from the initial language. Finally, we will explore the extent to which domain-general executive functions (i.e., inhibitory control and working memory) modulate successful statistical learning across two artificial languages.
