My name is Nkeke Delphine, and I am from Cameroon. I am pursuing my PhD in Translation Studies at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. My research focuses on the role of official bilingualism and translation in nation-building in Cameroon, as well as the impact of foreign language institutions on Cameroon's identity and national cohesion. Additionally, I am exploring the sociocultural impact of the collaboration between literary writers and translators in promoting national unity.

While in Cameroon, I faced the daunting challenge of finding an institution where I could pursue a PhD program in Translation Studies anywhere in the world. The key obstacle was finding professors willing to supervise and guide my research. In my search, I contacted Professor Charlotte Baker at the Department of Languages and Cultures, Lancaster University, who promptly responded and expressed interest in my research proposal. This marked the beginning of my journey at Lancaster University.

Despite its small size, Lancaster City has a welcoming atmosphere and friendly residents. The city is well-known for its historic architecture, stunning landscapes, and natural beauty. Explore many attractions, including Lancaster Castle, Williamson’s Park, Morecambe's beautiful shores, and the nearby Lake District. I enjoyed a boat ride at Coniston, visiting historic locations and the famous Wild Cat Island. The city is peaceful and easily accessible, with various transportation options available.

Lancaster University provides excellent academic facilities and social and recreational opportunities. As a student at Lancaster, I have had an extraordinary experience. The Lancaster University library is a wonderful place for studying, offering extensive academic resources, comfortable study spaces, and assistance when needed. The university organises various events that allow students to interact and engage with each other. I get to manage my time effectively thanks to the amenities provided by the university and the flexible nature of my supervisors.

My time within the Department of Languages and Cultures has been particularly captivating. DeLC's collaboration with other departments sets it apart at Lancaster University. The department provides a culturally diverse and friendly environment where social and academic events occur regularly, fostering student and staff engagement and exchange of experiences. The DeLC community is truly remarkable, as once you become a part of it, you are embraced as a member of a close-knit family. The staff at DeLC are incredibly kind, approachable, and welcoming. I am always struck by how wonderfully the tutors receive you at their doors, even without prior notice. It is no secret that DeLC provides everything one needs to break through. So far, my journey with my supervisors, the esteemed Professor Charlotte and Dr. Delphine Grass, has been immensely pleasant. I must also mention the vibrant Head of the Department, Dr Derek Hird, the warm French community, and the remarkable staff at DeLC. DeLC feels like home; everyone is always willing to listen and support one another. I enjoy the little social chats at the DeLC kitchen and the end-of-year social gatherings and picnics organised within the department.

At DeLC, I have actively participated in various activities, such as colloquiums, seminars, workshops, and teaching. These experiences have been enriching and have contributed significantly to my personal growth. That’s just how DeLC helps to shape you.

As I continue my journey at Lancaster University at DeLC, I cherish every moment. If you seek a place to study peacefully while enjoying a vibrant social life, I highly recommend Lancaster University and its welcoming community. Come and join us at DeLC, the happening Department.
