Scilang conference discusses the integration of languages into science and science into languages

The recent Scilang conference, held on 8 July 2022, organised as part of the FASS-funded research project, Languages in science/Science in languages, attracted a large number of high-quality speakers. The project is a collaboration between Derek Hird (DeLC) and Tim Douglas (Engineering). Covering a variety of backgrounds, from polyglot podcasters to academics and students in the sciences and the humanities, the speakers all shared a love of languages and an enthusiasm for integrating languages and sciences in their work and studies. Collectively, they provided a powerful rebuttal to the notion that languages and sciences should be treated as two distinct fields. The speakers widely agreed that languages are of great benefit to careers in science, and that bringing the sciences into languages enhances and broadens the appeal of learning languages. Further project initiatives include: a series of podcast interviews with figures who bring languages and sciences together in their work; the development of languages and science in schools outreach; and more networking opportunities for the growing number of people who work at the nexus of languages and science.
