Carbon black pigment is used to create black plastics, however, these black plastics cannot be detected by near-infrared detection commonly used in plastic sorting facilities, meaning that they are not recycled. My research is in detecting these black plastics using the mid-infrared spectrum and developing light-emitting diodes using III-V group materials that correspond to these wavelengths in order to create a low energy sorting system which can be used to sort these plastics.
