Campus in the City, an initiative which brings cutting-edge University research to the residents of Lancaster, Morecambe and District, is back for the third time by popular demand.

From Minecraft to memory maps and from politics to pets, the event due to take place in the heart of Lancaster will provide the community with an exciting insight into the research that takes place at the University.

The project packs a wealth of academic work and student life into a shop unit in St Nicholas Arcades in Lancaster.

This year’s event begins on 12 March with a technology day that will give everyone the chance to explore a Minecraft version of the University campus, experience virtual reality and interact with an iPad robot.

And in the coming weeks, visitors to St Nicholas Arcades will be able to take part in psychology experiments, attend pop-up art exhibitions and take a look at the University’s student-built racing car.

Campus in the City will remain in Lancaster city centre until 21 May. Other event highlights include:

  • Cookery demonstrations by the University’s Executive Chef
  • Opportunities to see the human body like you’ve never seen it before with the Medical School
  • A chance to take part in creating a memory map of the Lake District

Professor Mark E. Smith, the Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University, said: “A university should be representative of the region it comes from and should seek to engage with that region. As a university, we are very much a part of Lancaster and I think that the buzz generated on campus and in the community by the Campus in the City project demonstrates that.”

Manager of St Nicholas Arcades Paul Smith said: “I am very pleased to welcome Campus in the City to St Nicholas Arcades. They have some very exciting events planned, something for all of our customers to enjoy.”

Campus in the City is open Tuesday to Saturday, with daytime events taking place from 10am to 4pm.

All events are free to attend.

Event co-manager Lindsey King said: “We’re really looking forward to the third Campus in the City and to moving into our new location. Everyone is welcome to come along, join in and find out more about some of the amazing things we do at the University.”
