Join Librarian Dr Julianne Simpson and Dr Alexander Wragge-Morley, Lecturer in History of Science and Medecine (School of Global Affairs), for a 2-hour tour of Manchester’s historic Chetham’s Library. The oldest public library in the Anglophone world, Chetham's has been in continuous use since 1653.
With over 100,000 volumes of printed books, most dating from before 1851, Chetham's Library was the first facility for independent study in the north of England and its collections shed light on the history of public learning as well as on the effect of the Enlightenment on the culture of the North. Dr Simpson will be showing us around the collection, while Dr Wragge-Morley draws on his own research experiences at Chetham’s, exploring Robert Hooke's Micrographia (1665).
This excursion is designed to enable Patrons, Friends and supporters of the Regional Heritage Centre to enjoy informative talks by our speakers while touring Chetham’s Library in Manchester. Places are strictly limited - just 20 can take part. Booking deadline: Friday 17 April. Please note that transport to Manchester is *not* provided, and there is no scheduled rest break or refreshments.
