The ARISE (Ageing Research - Innovations in Statistical Exploration) program, organised by the ASA (American Statistical Association) Statistics and Data Science in Ageing Interest Group, offers the opportunity for promising students and young scientists to showcase their work in developing innovative data science methods with applications in ageing research. We are pleased to announce that STOR-i PhD student Owen Li has been selected as a finalist of the program, and chosen to present his work in the upcoming ARISE Webinar Series which will take place between August-November 2025.

Owen's submission to the program focused on his work with his PhD industry partner Howz, and the development of novel methodologies using changepoints to model data with a periodic nature. The work enables Howz to model an individual’s routine behaviour, so that any changes to it can be flagged early (e.g. waking up a lot during the night) and is designed to help prevent health problems from developing and subsequent hospitalisations. Owen's methods are now being used as Howz’s main algorithm in their customer-facing products.

Commenting on becoming a finalist, Owen said: "There’s lots of research and good work being done in ageing research, so I am proud and grateful to have been selected as a finalist for the ARISE program, and I am excited to be able to present my work to the wider community."
