Three first class engineering students recently received their Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Awards

The awards were presented following presentations during the Fluid Machinery Group (FMG) Board Meeting  in London at the IMechE Head Quarters as follows:

1) Peter Jesson (MEng(Hons) Mech Eng) – Project: Multi Axis Wave Energy Converter – Award: Institution Best Project Certificate – Currently working for Rolls Royce
2) Jonathan Taylor (MEng(Hons) Mech Eng) – Project: Design Build and Test a Macroscopic Micromanipulator for the mechanical testing of MEMS devices – Award: Institution Best Project Certificate
3) Jamie Mitchell (BEng(Hons) Nuclear Eng) – Project: Proton Therapy Linac Design - Currently Lancaster University PhD student at Daresbury Laboratory – Award: The Institution Project Award and Medal

Peter Jesson’s Project on the Multi Axis Wave Energy Converter supervised by Dr George Aggidis participated also at the Danish DTU Green Challenge Award in June 2015 hosted by the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) achieving a second place in the Masters project concept category winning a prize of 10000 Danish Kroner.

Dr Aggidis is the Director of the Lancaster University Renewable Energy Group and Fluid Machinery Group, which carries out research into conversion of energy from renewable sources and mainly water sources, including waves, tides and land-based hydro power. He is also a Board Member of the IMechE Fluid Machinery Group. Dr Aggidis was delighted with the students’ success: “I am always proud to present our Lancaster University engineering students to my colleagues at the IMechE in London. The project-based focus of the engineering teaching at Lancaster offers a significant benefit to our students.” Engineering at Lancaster is at the top 10 in the UK, recently ranked 7th in the UK for Mechanical Engineering (The Times and Sunday Times 2016)”.
