By working with industry, our MSc programme has launched the Data Science careers of over 70 students in 2 years.
Lancaster University was one of the first institutions to offer a dedicated Data Science MSc. Data Science skills are essential for most modern organisations, but employers have found these skills to be scarce. Working with both Industry and UK Government Agencies, Lancaster University identified the skills needed to succeed in real-world Data Science and has created a programme that combines teaching these skills with the opportunities for students to use them in Industry.
Our programme is unique in its deliberate focus on multidisciplinary learning. Effective data science requires skills drawn from a range of disciplines and therefore our programme is offered jointly by The School of Computing and Communications, The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Lancaster University Management School and The Lancaster Environment Centre.
The School of Computing and Communications teaches programming, systems development, and machine learning. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics teaches statistical methods, modelling and inference. Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) teaches business analytics and data mining. The Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) delivers specific training in environment science and research methodology.
The inter-disciplinary syllabus provides specialist subject knowledge principled in the belief that 'the greatest opportunity for innovation comes from working across disciplines'.
Last year 96% of our students confirmed that the MSc Data Science had met or exceeded their personal objectives.
Our alumni have progressed to data science roles at Amazon, Deloitte, Santander, SAS, The Co-operative Insurance, The Hut Group, Bloomberg, The Office of National Statistics, The Department for Communities and Local Government, The Environment Agency, The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and many more organisations.
We have an excellent record of securing opportunities for our students to perform their dissertation projects in industry. Over the past 2 years 70 of our MSc Data Science students have performed placement projects with our external partners. The vast majority of these placements were supported by a bursary of £3,000. Placement projects give hands-on experience of commercial Data Science and give our students an advantage in the careers marketplace.
