Drop into our pop-up plastics café to learn more about the problems and solutions to plastic food packaging from Lancaster University researchers and local businesses Atkinson’s Coffee and Stephenson’s Dairy. Coffee from Atkinson’s will be on sale.

Coffee and discussion 12-2pm, short talks at 12:30pm

Single-use plastics proliferate in our supermarkets, corner shops, fridges and lunchboxes. They play a role in reducing food waste, but plastics pollution is a major environmental concern, leading plastic packaging to recently top the list of consumer concerns ahead of price. Drop into our pop-up plastics café to learn more about the problems and solutions to plastic food packaging from Lancaster University researchers and local businesses:

Local businesses Atkinsons and Stephenson’s Dairy will be selling coffee and milk, and sharing how they are approaching the issues around packaging waste.

  • Hear about how new research at Lancaster University is tackling the problem of plastics.
  • Bring your own lunch along to this event and meet like minded people who are interested in addressing the problem of plastic food packaging.
  • After lunch why not dispose of any packaging in our plastic waste collection, which we’ll be running throughout the week to gauge how much and what kinds of plastics waste we are generating and improve knowledge of plastic recycling.

About LEC 2050 Food Week

LEC 2050 Food Week is a week of lunchtime activities organised by Lancaster Environment Centre’s Sustainability Group aimed at sparking debate and generating action on issues relating to food sustainability and our campus. These activities are open to all.

This event follows on from our LEC 2050 Travel Week earlier in the year.

The LEC 2050 Week series challenges us all to step up to the global sustainability challenges we face. Our current food system accounts for 30% of our greenhouse gas emissions and is a major contributor to land use change and degradation, water pollution and biodiversity loss. This week will explore what changes we will need to make to our diets, habits, and packaging before 2050 to meet our carbon commitments for mitigating climate change.

Lancaster Environment Centre’s Sustainability Group brings together volunteers across academic, research, professional staff and students and partners to work on sustainability issues in our department, campus and wider community.

Everyone is welcome to join in with the LEC 2050 Week series through the #LEC2050week. (NB you don't need a Twitter account to view the content)
