The Pamir mountain range is part of the India – Asia collision zone, its evolution is key to our understanding of internal deformation processes. However at this time, very little is known about the timing of Pamir indentation and un-roofing. My project is two phase, phase 1 examines sediments in the western Tarim basin which contain the detrital record of the Pamir evolution, using provenance techniques and palaeomagnetism in order to constrain the timing of Pamir indentation and uplift. Phase 2 aims to identify the relationship between this and the final retreat of the Tarim Sea in order to identify the causes and effects of Pamir formation on the Asian interior.
