Analytics Manager, A.T. Kearney

After my BSc degree in Organisational Management from Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics and analytics-related work experience, I decided to expand my knowledge of practical operational research methods. The UK, as a native land of OR, seemed an obvious destination.

Firstly, I did an MSc in Management Science and Operational Research at the University of Warwick, where I got very interested in computer simulation. After that I started looking for a PhD programme that could satisfy my interest. A studentship offer from the Department of Management Science at Lancaster University Management School and an agreement to be supervised byProfessor Michael Pidd – one of the most eminent people in the simulation community – was the best opportunity I could wish for.

My PhD research considered practical applications of distributed simulation in Supply Chain Management. Given that supply chains are geographically distributed entities, it seems sensible to consider the application of distributed computation to their simulation. However, practical business merits of such simulations are not obvious and this is what my research concentrated on.

After successful completion of my PhD, I moved to industry and currently I work as an Operational Research Analyst at United Company RUSAL. I am acting as an internal consultant and am responsible for holistic analysis, consulting and improvements in the areas of supply chain operations, purchasing, procurement and production planning. This gives me an excellent opportunity to apply my OR knowledge that I gained during my MSc and PhD degrees.

One day I hope to move back to academia where I can use my theoretical background and practical experience for teaching and applied research.

Alexey subsequently moved to London, where he works as an Analytics Manager for A.T. Kearney.
