Trade & Investment Event Coordinator, Guangzhou Municipal Government

I did my MSc in Project Management at LUMS in 2004-2005. It was a very exciting and rewarding experience. I chose Lancaster because of its strong reputation in academic research and teaching, and its superior environment for study and life.

At the beginning I found the modules quite demanding, requiring a lot of effort in both group projects and individual assignments. However, our tutors and teachers always tried to help us to achieve better results. I also learnt a lot from my classmates because they were talented people from diverse backgrounds.

In the summer I did a project-based dissertation with one of my classmates for BSES Expeditions, the British Schools Exploring Society, based in London. Our focus was on Process Mapping. Through the project we could put our project management knowledge into practice and we gained substantial experience of what project management is like in reality.

Life in Lancaster was very memorable. I have lasting impressions of the beautiful countryside that changed through the four seasons. It provided a perfect environment for me to focus on study.

After graduation I came back home to Guangzhou, China, and went through an interview process for the 16th Asian Games Organising Committee. Then in October 2006 I went to Doha, Qatar with other colleagues for the Secondee Programme, run by the Doha Asian Games Organising Committee.

That two-month experience was amazing as I met events professionals from all over the world – from Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Torino 2006 – helping us to make the 15th Asian Games 'the Games of Your Life'. With my Lancaster learning experience, I feel that I had a better understanding of the organisation of the Games.

After working in the Project Management section of the 16th Asian Games Organising Committee, hosted in Guangzhou in 2010, I have since become an Event Project Manager for Guangzhou Municipal Government.

In my work, I constantly refer back to my course materials and notes from Lancaster and find them very useful.

Siyan is now the Trade & Investment Event Coordinator within the Guangzhou Municipal Government.
