Laura Miller
Lecturer in ArchitectureMy Role
I am a qualified architect and lead the Professional Practice Programme for the School of Architecture providing structured learning content across all year groups, including students who are working in practice between undergraduate and postgraduate study. I create links with professional practices in the North West and facilitate visits to architectural offices for students as well as organising mentoring experiences and project review opportunities between students and practicing architects. I plan and organise the annual field trip for students across the school and have developed a set principles for the organistaion of the trip to increase participation, provide equal opportunity and to demonstrate responsible travel and tourist behaviours through low carbon expenditure and critical review of places visited. I plan and organise the annual summer school provided to all students in the architecture school and focussed on hands on experiences and collegiate ways of working. I run workshops for primaryschool children and also for primary school teachers to give confidence in teaching architecture as a subject to primary school-aged children as required by the national curriculm.

External Roles
I am a council member of the Lancaster and Westmorland Society of Architects, a branch of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
I am also a member of the Association of Professional Practice Advisors in Architecture
Current Research
I am currenrly working with a colleague at De Montfort University to develop consistent principles for Architecture Schools to organise and plan Study Tours. Evidence shows that there is inequality and lack of opportunity across the schools alongside varied approaches to sustainable practices and considerations of appropriatness of types of visits.
I am also researching transactional analysis between tutors and students and teh naviagtion of ILSPs with the impact on individual students participation in the established format of the architectural review.
I am researching the opportunities for more equal learning experinces through stuctured approaches to understanding the dynamics of groupworking and developing tools to enable more effective and equitable experiences for students when undertaking groupworking with a focus on the future use in proifessional practice.
