This conference aims to • break down the misperception of a “fork in the road” between science and languages • highlight the complementarity of languages and science • discuss creative methods of combining science with modern languages within teaching

This misperception is reinforced by secondary school systems which divide education into different disciplines without emphasizing cross-disciplinary links and the holistic nature of education.

• discuss creative methods of combining science with modern languages within teaching to enhance both:

-language teaching by introducing science-related material and

-science teaching by introducing language-related material.

The conference will feature the following speakers:

• Cyrille Rollet, Department of Languages and Cultures (DeLC), Lancaster University

• “Francophone contributors to science and their heritage”

• Dr. Luís Pinho, Department of Chemistry, Lancaster University

• “The language of science: young learners, scientifi c literacy and cultural models”

• Marta Melnyk, Ukrainian polyglot, co-organizer of The Polyglot Gathering (largest conference worldwide dedicated to language learning), language teacher, IT specialist and blogger • “Types of Languages in IT”

• Laura-Jane Baxter, polyglot and language learning blogger
