Meet the Team

Portrait of Adwoa

Adwoa Agyemang-Benneh

Hello, I am Adwoa (pronounced Ajoa) currently a Teaching Fellow at the Lancaster University Management School. I’ve enjoyed an eclectic career path that has led me to currently facilitate work-based learning and explore healthcare research in low-income settings.

I am glad to be a member of the AHBT as I understand first-hand what it means to be seen and treated negatively, and how disheartening the experience may be. When I’m not staring at my laptop for one reason or the other, I’m spending time with my family or reading a book (fiction, please).

Portrait of Awawing

Andongma Awawing Anjwengwo

Hello, I am Awawing, a Senior Research Associate at the Lancaster Environment Centre. My research experience spans five countries across Asia, Africa, and Europe. I am also an elected Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society, where I serve on the membership and EDI committees. As you can tell, I am extremely passionate about my research with insects. However, I am equally passionate about promoting inclusivity at Lancaster University to ensure that every member is valued and respected.

Fun fact: I hold a level 4 Chinese proficiency certificate. I lived and worked in Wuhan, China for seven years before the COVID-19 pandemic and my son was born in the hospital where COVID-19 was first diagnosed.

Portrait of Ellie

Ellie Appleton

Hi, I’m Ellie! I arrived in Lancaster as a student in 1998 and have stayed ever since, becoming a member of staff in 2014. I have a great deal of experience supporting students through difficulties in my capacity as deputy senior college advisor for Pendle, and prior to that through working in teaching office roles. My current ‘day job’ includes a remit for Safety, Health and Wellbeing, which I consider the most valuable part of my role. It is really important to me that I do all I can to provide a safe, accessible and positive working environment for all, and support the mental health of those around me.

I identify as ADHD and my children are also neurodivergent, so I have a particular interest in neurodiversity and the challenges often faced by members of the ND community. I am a trustee of a local peer support group for parents of autistic children with PDA profile.

I love music, chatting over a brew, gardening, and the simple pleasures in life like watching the Morecambe Bay sunset!

In my role, I’ve supported many students with their own difficulties at university and mentor members of staff in Engineering.

I am proud to be a part of the Anti-Bullying and Harassment Team as I have lots of experience in helping individuals in a variety of settings and fostering inclusivity in the workplace. Others tell me that I am a good listener, caring and empathetic, which I hope will enable others to put their trust in me to discuss sensitive information in this role. Outside of work, I am a mum of two young children, love travelling and enjoy meeting new people. I am a late-diagnosed neurodivergent individual.

I have worked on the Anti-harassment and Bullying Team before in its previous incarnation. I’m based on-campus Monday – Friday in A06, Grizedale College. I like knitting and playing tennis (badly!).

Portrait of Ann-Marie

Ann-Marie Hougton

My name is Ann-Marie Houghton and I have worked at Lancaster for nearly 30 years and was pleased to be involved in the previous informal network that supported staff and students who had questions about, or who had experienced bullying or harassment. I am aware from that experience and from friends outside the university what an impact the things people say and how they behave can have on people. During my time at the university I have been involved in a range of Equality Diversity and Inclusion groups and initiatives and am committed to working with others to challenge injustices where they occur and promoting respect and inclusion within our community.

Portrait of Mamuna

Mamuna Hussain

Hi I’m Mamuna. I’ve worked at the university in the digital accessibility team in ISS for several years now. My work is primarily focussed on how we can improve how disabled students and staff access digital materials at the university. I joined the AHBT as it’s important to me to help foster a positive, inclusive and welcoming environment at the university and to help individuals who are being bullied or harassed.

Portrait of Carolyn

Carolyn Jackson

I’m Carolyn and I’m a professor in the Department of Educational Research. I first joined Lancaster University as a student in 1988 and, aside from short periods working elsewhere, have been here since. I’ve been involved in various support and advisory roles over the years, both inside and outside of the University, including other anti-harassment and bulling networks. My academic work is also focused on challenging social injustices, especially gender-related harassment and violence in educational contexts. I’m a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Portrait of James

James Mawdesley

Hello, I’m James Mawdesley and I have two jobs here at Lancaster University – I am a Research Development Officer in Research and Enterprise Services (partnered to the Faculty of Health and Medicine), and I am the Principal of Furness College. I have worked here since 2017, though I was previously a History student here. Away from work, I am a keen amateur cricketer and walker (this is me on top of Knipe Scar in the Lake District), and I am a long-suffering supporter of Preston North End FC.

I am very pleased to be part of this new network, and I hope that I will be able to help colleagues and students who are affected by bullying and harassment.

Portrait of Pam

Pam Pickles

I have worked in a careers-related capacity at Lancaster University since 2002, following on from a successful career in retail management. Based in the Faculty of Science and Technology, my current remit is to manage an internship programme which builds on existing employability-related initiatives across the faculty. My principal aim is to help academic departments source high quality internship opportunities which are relevant to their students. I’m based within the Faculty Partnerships and Business Engagement team and regularly liaise with businesses, students and university staff to discuss possibilities around the arrangement of internships.

Without doubt, as a non-scientist, the best thing about working in my role is learning about all the fantastic research taking place within the scientific community, both within the university and beyond. I have learned so much more about the world around us and how we can affect it than in any other job I can think of! No two days are ever the same – and I get to work with some wonderful people from extremely diverse backgrounds.

Away from work, I love walking in the Lakes, watching live music and wine tasting.

Portrait of Emma

Emma Shaw

I’m Emma and my current role is Undergraduate Teaching Coordinator in the Psychology department. I’ve worked at Lancaster since 2011 in roles in the Management School, Chemistry and the Medical School. I wanted to become a member of the Anti-Harassment and Bullying Team to help and support others after experiencing bullying myself. I’m really excited about being part of the team and making a difference to staff and students' experiences.

Portrait of Elaine

Elaine Taylor

Hi, I’m Elaine. I am a Senior Lecturer at Lancaster Medical School and I have been the student support lead for the medical school since 2011. I have seen the impact that bullying, harassment and unwanted behaviours can have on individuals, students and staff, but I am also very aware of the difference that it can make, to feel listened to and supported in such situations. I am committed to providing that support whenever I can.
