Title: UK food poverty - analysing foodbank and poverty data in Lancaster and Morecambe

Abstract: In 2020/21, an estimated 13.4 million people (20%) in the UK lived in poverty, and the number of foodbanks in operation is at an all-time high. The Trussell Trust alone supports over 1500 foodbank centres within its franchise in 2023 compared to only two in 2004, in addition to 1100 independent foodbanks. We examine the range of food poverty organisations that aim to combat rising rates of poverty, with a particular focus on the Lancaster and Morecambe area. Using data from Morecambe Bay Foodbank, we give a detailed view of the current state of poverty in the area including the impact of the pandemic on foodbank referrals, demographic analysis of people who use foodbanks, and a spatial view of where in the district requires most support. We also examine the data available to use for poverty analysis and the challenges faced in carrying out representative analysis between a wide range of organisations.
