Heritage Language 2 Consortium (HL2C)
A strategic partnership for the study of Portuguese in multilingual settings
Scroll to content
The Heritage Language 2 Consortium (HL2C), is a strategic partnership between the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Camões Institute), and six European universities: Lancaster University in UK, the Universities of Lisbon, Minho, NOVA and Porto in Portugal, and the University of Tübingen in Germany.
The Consortium has two main objectives.
The first objective is to promote research on heritage and second language acquisition and teaching. While our primary focus is on Portuguese as a heritage or second language, we welcome colleagues and students whose research focuses on other languages.
The second objective is to make the results of this research available to the key stakeholders in the language learning process, from pupils, parents and teachers to school administrators and policy makers. For this reason, we regularly organize and participate in outreach events with local communities.

Working groups
The Consortium has three working groups which bring together, on a regular basis, researchers from the partner institutions. The working groups serve to discuss ongoing work and to develop future collaborative projects in an informal and friendly setting.

This working group brings together researchers and educators with an interest in the teaching of Portuguese as a heritage or second language. One of the priority areas is teacher education and the development of training for language professionals in order to further improve the quality of heritage language education.
The aims of this working group include the development of a “teacher profile” for Portuguese heritage language education, of teacher needs analyses (e.g., materials, professional development), and of a global network of Portuguese teaching coordinators. In addition, the working group aims to describe the most effective teaching strategies in terms of student outcomes on heritage language acquisition at school and to capture the teachers voice, practices and impact on the heritage language acquisition of students.
The working group is led by Professor Isabel Margarida Duarte (Porto).
Current members include Simone Auf der Maur (Porto), Ângela Carvalho (Porto), Leanete Thomas Dotta (Lusófona), Maria de Lurdes Gonçalves (Camões Institute), Isabel Margarida Duarte (Porto), Regina Duarte (Plano Nacional de Leitura), Fátima Outeirinho (Porto), Sónia Valente Rodrigues (Porto), Paulo Jorge Santos (Porto), Fátima Silva (Porto), Isabel Sebastião (Camões Institute).
