Verbing in English: processing and learnability

Creativity in the lexicon has been associated with derivational morphology which can be responsible for category changes too. Zero-derivation however is also possible in English with the Noun-Verb category shifts being a prime example. Several studies have looked at the theoretical, psycholinguistic and acquisition aspects of zero-derivations, many of them focusing on the instrument-V ' shift e.g. a hammer / to hammer'. In this talk, I will present a series of studies that have focused on the process of forming novel Vs in English with the aim of discussing the components of language, mostly syntax and pragmatics, that are involved in their production and comprehension/processing by adult L1 and L2 speakers of English as well as their properties in child L2 development.
