As part of an exploration of the different ways of connecting with the north-west region –responding to the debate around English Devolution – Lancaster University has organised a lecture to be given by the Leader of Preston City Council.

Councillor Matthew Brown will deliver the 2026 Local Government Lecture on February 11 in the Management School (LT15) on campus from noon until 1.30pm.

Since summer 2025, the University’s School of Global Affairs have piloted CPD sessions for local authorities, held a question time event with councillors and organised a policy roundtable with local government managers.

“This spring, we have decided to hold a keynote lecture-style event where a prominent figure in local government is invited to outline their vision for their area,” said Dr Martin Steven, the discipline lead for politics in the School of Global Affairs.

“We are delighted that Councillor Brown has agreed to give the lecture and we look forward to hearing his views on the future of the region - in particular, his pioneering ‘Preston model’ for regional development.”

The free event, with tea and coffee, is open to all but please e-mail globalaffairsenquiries@lancaster.ac.uk to reserve your place.
