Research Overview

I am a Senior Research Associate at the School of Computing and Communications and I am currently working on the 'Reimagining digital research infrastructure in environmental science for a sustainable future' project. I employ participatory and systemic design research methods to explore the complexity of the environmental impacts of Digital Research Infrastrutures (DRI) and to increase understanding of practices and policies that shape this sector, Imagining a more sustainable future for DRI.

My background is in design, both as a researcher and practitioner, specialising in participatory and systemic design approaches. I worked as a research associate at Lancaster University in following project: PARIS-DE, Mobile Age, Clasp and Active Parks. Often my work involves creating tools for stakeholders from the insights gathered though co-design. The most recent example are the 'Rebound Archetypes Cards', a card-based tool to help designers and developer, to consider, assess and mitigate potential rebound effects of their design interventions (https://wp.lancs.ac.uk/paris-de/rebound-archetype-cards/). Other examples inlcude an app co-designed with older adults to tackle isolation, co-creating wearable prototypes for investigating ways to record and manage anxiety with people in the autism spectrum and working with local communities to imagine, design and prototype ways to increase the levels of physical activities around walks at a local park.

My PhD research looked at how the confluence of digital innovation and a culture of co-creation was affecting the clothing industry. The focus was on how new models of businesses and services could instigate and support amateurs to create their own clothes with the help of digital technology.

My research interests include systemic design, co-design and other participatory approaches to design, digital innovation, HCI and sustainability, digital fabrication, the role of design and designers in innovation.
