Event Details

This Saturday 16 September Study Day held at the Storey Institute and Lancaster Maritime Museum complements the exhibition ‘Hoard of Hoards’. It focuses on deposits of coins and metal artefacts found around the Lancaster area dating from the Late Bronze Age through to the Early Modern era.

We will have a guided tour, following presentations on some of our local Roman and Medieval hoards by expert speakers. There will also be an opportunity to meet one of our Finds Liaison Officers from the Portable Antiquities Scheme, as well as some local detectorists and their exciting discoveries.

From 9.30 a.m. Assemble at Storey Institute Auditorium (tea/coffee is not served at beginning of the day – but is available to purchase at the onsite café bar)

10.00-10.10 Introduction to the Day Carolyn Dalton, Museum Development Manager, Lancaster City Council

10.10-11.00 Telling stories with the Roman coin hoards of Morecambe Bay – Dr George Watson, Numismatist

11.00-11.30 Coffee/tea & biscuits

11.30-12.20 Medieval coin hoards and borders – Carl Savage, Department of Archaeology, University of York

12.20-12.30 Questions and discussion

12.30-1.30 Lunch*

1.30 p.m. Assemble at Lancaster Maritime Museum, and divide into two groups for the afternoon activities.

Group A will tour the exhibition, led by Carolyn Dalton, and will then be free to explore the Maritime Museum until the refreshment break.

Group B will be based in the Education Room, where they will meet Finds Liaison Officer Dr Pauline Clarke and metal detectorists for a ‘show and tell’ session, where questions and answers are encouraged.
