Encouraging and nurturing gender equality in higher education
The Sociology Department celebrates diversity and strives to provide an equal educational opportunity for all undergraduate and postgraduate students, regardless of their gender or personal background. As part of the University-wide effort to ensure gender equality and diversity in higher education we submitted an application for a Bronze Athena SWAN award in April 2019 and are awaiting the results.

Sociology Department – Bronze Athena SWAN
As part of the submission, we designed a four-year action plan to address some of the equality issues identified around recruitment, development and departmental culture. The departmental Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee is responsible for ensuring the realisation of the plan. This webpage will be updated termly with progress updates.

Athena SWAN Action Plan
Suggestions and feedback around equality, diversity and inclusion within the Sociology department (including those relating to gender) are welcome and can be submitted anonymously online.
