A seminar run by the Centre for Child & Family Justice Research: "Children, Care and Inequality: a View from the North"
"Who gets looked after? Inequality and Children's Services" by Professor Paul BywatersChildren in different places across the UK have very different chances of being in the care system. This is not a post code lottery but reflects complex interacting patterns of social inequality and intersectionality, sometimes compounded by children's services policy, funding and practices. In this seminar Paul Bywaters will discuss the strengths and limitations of the growing evidence of inequalities in the care system and outline the implications for developing new directions in policy, practice and research."Time, place and children's unequal lives" by Anna RoundIn this talk Anna will first discuss the findings in IPPR North's 2018 'State of the North' research report, "Reprioritising the Northern Powerhouse". Focusing on largescale economic, social and policy trends, the report considers how to address persistent inequalities in the north of England. Anna will then examine how issues of 'economic justice' affect children and young people in the north of England. This will draw on IPPR research into the ways in which place and community factors impact on children's lives, opportunities, and 'life chances'. Anna will then focus on how place is relevant to these lived experiences, and how this can be used to critique some of the assumptions underlying current policy on children, education and families. This issue is not often raised in policy debates.
