Schedule
16:00 – 16:15: Introduction to Lancaster University
16:15 – 16:35: Media and Cultural Studies Taster Session
Have you ever seen products in shops saying ‘feminism’ on them, for you to purchase? In this interactive session we’ll think about what selling these products means. Does this bring new visibility to feminism? Or is this just a form of ‘commodity feminism’, reducing feminism’s goals (of equal pay, freedom of violence, etc) to commodities to be bought and sold?
16:35 – 16:55: Film Studies Taster Session
In response to this year's IWD theme of seeking out and celebrate women's achievements, with this session we'll explore the work of women film-makers. We will look briefly at the history of women's role in the development of cinema, and will consider why it is that women directors are so frequently overlooked by critics and film historians. We will also consider what is distinctive about films made by women directors and whether films by women directors inevitably view the world with a more critical eye.
Case study: Patty Jenkins and superhero films.
16:55 – 17:15: Student Ambassador Q&A Panel
17:15: Final comments and close.
