The School of Global Affairs' Professor of International History and Security, Marco Wyss, appears prominently—especially in Episodes 3 and 4—of the new ZDF documentary series Luftkrieg – Von Flugpionieren bis Drohnenpiloten (Air War – From Aviation Pioneers to Drone Operators). The series, recently broadcast on German national television, traces the evolution of air power from its early origins to the complex technological and strategic landscape of the 21st century.
Professor Wyss draws on his expertise in international history and security, particularly the Cold War, European security and defence policy, as well as the transformation of armed forces to contextualise the key role of air power in shaping global strategy. His contributions highlight how nuclear weapons and strategic delivery systems transformed deterrence and alliance politics during the Cold War, and how subsequent geostrategic developments—particularly precision air power, remote operations and drones—have reshaped the conduct and perception of modern conflict.
His involvement underscores the international profile of Lancaster’s research strength in International History and Security, and reflects the visibility of the Centre for War and Diplomacy in public-facing discussions of warfare and global security.
