Dr Douglas Booker
Graduate Teaching AssistantResearch Overview
I am an Honorary Researcher in the Lancaster Environment Centre, after having completed my PhD in the department under the supervison of Professor Gordon Walker and Dr Paul Young. For my PhD research I combined the doing of air quality science (including a nationwide schools indoor air quality monitoring campaign, and a citizen science project), with a critical reflection on how air quality knowledge is produced, and its implications for claims of environmental justice.
I also run NAQTS, a Lancaster Environment Centre collocated business that develops tools and technologies to provide independent, reliable, and holistic air quality information. Through my role as CEO of NAQTS, I am also an industry supervisor for multiple PhD projects.
I am a Lecturer in Indoor Air in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Leeds, where I deliver teaching and research on the physical and social dimensions of indoor air quality.
I am the Regional Clean Air Champion for the West Midlands to the North West of England as part of the SPF Clean Air Programme. In this role I help to bring together research across atmospheric, medical, and social science to develop practical and fair solutions for air quality issues. I help to ensure that these interdisciplinary communities are connected to the public and wider policy and business environments to maximise the impact of their research. As part of my Regional Clean Air Champion position I hold Visiting Academic status at the University of Southampton in the Faculty of Medicine.

Current Teaching
I deliver the LEC 101 lecture on environmental justice and air quality.
This lecture examines who, in social and geographical terms, lives with the consequences of air pollution. Is bad air quality distributed equally according to differences in income, ethnicity, or age? Or does pollution follow some in society more than others?
