The Data Science Institute has a joint focus on both the development of fundamental Data Science theory and methods, and the application of Data Science within various disciplines. Theme areas include the Foundations of Data Science, Society, Health, Environment and Sustainability.

For 2019 we welcome new membership applications from academic staff, researchers and graduate students. Membership of the institute indicates a commitment to engage with DSI’s aims and objectives, undertaking research aligned to the institute’s goals and participating in institute activities. This includes a willingness to work with other institute members across traditional discipline boundaries, including the development of new proposals for research funding.

To apply, please send a short CV (any format is fine – we aren’t looking to create work for anyone) and a brief summary of your data science related activities. Prior to applying please discuss this with your head of department or supervisor if applicable. Specific aspects we will seek include:

• A track record of publications closely aligned to DSI’s objectives or theme areas.

• A track record of or, in the case of early career academics potential for, grant funding in a DSI area.

• Demonstrable interest in engaging with DSI’s agenda and other researchers; including collaboration, mentorship and advice to colleagues.

• A commitment to impact and external collaboration.

As a reminder, membership of the University’s research institutes is entirely compatible with membership of departmental or faculty research groups and centres, and all research funds obtained by DSI flow directly into departments. Many of our existing members are not from traditional data science disciplines and we are happy to discuss with potential new members how their work might align with the institute's areas of activity.

If you have questions about the application, please contact Nigel Davies or Jo Knight via dsi@lancaster.ac.uk. If you would like to be kept informed of DSI’s activities without becoming a member please subscribe to our newsletter by sending an email to dsi@lancaster.ac.uk with the Subject Title: Newsletter Subscription.

Initial applications should be received no later than 20th December 2019 and sent to dsi@lancaster.ac.uk with the Subject Title: 2019 Application to join DSI.
