Tutorials and One to One's

Tutorials and One to One (1:1) teaching are often smaller groups and less formal. Software is available to help you schedule sessions, and specific features within apps can help students make the most of their time with you. See the tips below on how you can use digital within these smaller meetings.

Tips for tutorials and one to one sessions

Be inclusive and accessible

If teaching remotely, give all students clear guidance about when and how they can access tutorial sessions. This could be hosted on your course's Moodle page. You can also create Teams meetings directly via Moodle in a post or announcement.

For distance and remote synchronous online teaching, you can use Microsoft Teams'  live captioning and transcription features to allow students to better understand what you are saying. It also makes tutorials more accessible for those with auditory impairments.

Use a scheduling tool

Using a digital scheduling tool will allow students to book 1:1 appointments at the click of a button, saving both of your time. You could use Moodle Scheduler, LibCal or Bookings with me. Click show more to see the benefits of each booking method.

  • Moodle Scheduler is a scheduling tool that is built into your Moodle course. It is highly customisable, allowing you to create bookable slots with a choice of duration, breaks in between, multiple or single students, and whether to use booking forms and reminder emails. If you have a number of tutors on your course, you can also set up different sets of slots for each tutor.
  • LibCal is a great tool, used by the University, that allows you to schedule meetings and book 1:1 sessions. You may find this to be useful if you are handling many students. It's the recommended tool for appointments across departments, so your students are likely to be familiar using it.
  • Bookings With Me can be used to book 1:1 sessions. It’s fully integrated with Outlook and Teams, meaning bookings are automatically added to your personal calendar, and online meeting links are automatically generated for both parties.

Use virtual spaces for online meetings

Both LibCal and Bookings with Me allow you to schedule online meetings with your students. You can also set up private channels in a Team to facilitate group working, where only the team owner and named individuals can access the channels. You can chat and even host meetings within the private channel.

Hit the record button

If you're conducting tutorials remotely, you may want to record the session for future use (make sure to get the student's consent first). For accessibility, you must apply auto-captions to the video once recorded, in Microsoft Teams you could also generate an auto-transcript(a link to the recording will appear in the meeting chat). See Recording Microsoft Teams meetings for further information.

Use collaborative note-taking

You can used a shared document or OneNote notebook to keep a record of your tutorials or 1:1 meetings. This would give you a shared space where you and your student(s) can take meeting notes, share feedback, and reflect on progress over longer periods. You can also create a single space to keep tutorial notes for an entire class using OneNote Class Notebook. In a Class Notebook, each student gets a private space where only a designated teacher can access the notes and interact with the student.
