Celebrate Black History Month across the 9 Colleges

Celebrate Black History Month

This Black History Month, Lancaster University’s Colleges are coming together with colleagues and student projects to celebrate Black history, culture and community across campus.

From exploring Lancaster’s own history to enjoying films, food, music and performances, there are opportunities for students and staff to learn something new, reflect and celebrate throughout October.

History Talk: Lancaster – A Golden Age?

Wednesday 21 October, from 1pm | County Common Room

What was Lancaster’s ‘Golden Age’, and what role did slavery play in the city’s history?

Award-winning Lancaster Tour Guide Gregory Wright will take us on a journey through Lancaster’s maritime past, exploring stories of slavery, shipbuilding, sugar and the sea.

The hour-long presentation will offer an opportunity to learn more about Lancaster’s history and the connections between the city and the wider history of slavery and the transatlantic trade.

Light refreshments will be provided, and you are welcome to bring your lunch.

Open to all students and staff.

Black History Month Film Nights

Across the Colleges throughout October

Sometimes the best way to start a conversation is to sit down and watch a great film together.

To mark Black History Month, the Colleges will be featuring inspirational films as part of their regular weekly movie nights. The films will provide opportunities to celebrate Black stories, experiences and achievements, as well as time to come together and enjoy a film with friends.

Film nights are hosted every Tuesday in alternate colleges; County and Lonsdale.

Get involved

Whether you want to learn more about Lancaster’s history, discover new perspectives, celebrate Black culture or simply spend time with friends, there are plenty of ways to get involved this Black History Month.
