Dr Luciana Mendes Barbosa

Lecturer in Sociology (Climate Change)

Research Overview

Dr Luciana Mendes Barbosa is a human geographer and Lecturer in Sociology (Climate Change) at Lancaster University. Her research examines how climate change, urban development and socio-environmental conflict reshape everyday life in the Global South. Working across Rio de Janeiro and Mossoró, Brazil, she centres the knowledge and political agency of communities facing racialised risk, forced displacement and unequal adaptation. Through participatory and decolonial research, she connects climate justice, urban political ecology and public engagement to develop grounded responses to climate vulnerability. Her current work leads the Lancaster–UERN ADAPTA-Mossoró collaboration, advancing international partnership and co-produced pathways for urban climate adaptation.
