Visiting scholar appointments

The Faculty of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences welcomes applications from academic staff members at other universities or tertiary institutions who wish to spend a period of up to 12 months at Lancaster to engage in research.

If you come to visit any of the disciplines within FHASS via the Visiting Scholar Scheme you will be charged a weekly fee of £80. This includes:

  • Monthly consecutive meetings with the member of staff that has agreed to be the discipline contact (1hr per month)
  • Attendance of up to 2 modules per term (discipline & space dependant)
  • Attendance of regular talks and/or workshops organised by the disciplines research groups
  • Use of other University facilities available to staff, including use of the University Library

The fee will apply regardless of whether you choose to hold your visit with us in term time or during the summer term where there are no classes. Summer Term runs from mid-end April to mid-end June. To benefit to the fullest from our academic resources and facilities we recommend that you come during teaching terms which run from the beginning of October till mid-December (Michaelmas Term) and from mid-January till mid-end March (Lent Term).

Please note that should you choose to spend any period of time outside Lancaster during the course of your visit with us, (for example, to travel around the UK or Europe), the fee will not be reduced to accommodate this arrangement.

Finally, for reasons of space and the availability of staff members, we are only able to accept a limited number of Visiting Scholar applications per year.

If you wish to apply; please read the attached guidance documents below, look to find an appropriate proposed contact person, and email your completed application form along with your CV and any questions you might have to the Research and Engagement team - fhassvisitingscholars@lancaster.ac.uk
