Lancaster University Library celebrates Green Libraries Week
Green Libraries Week, led by CILIP, is a national, annual celebration of libraries that focuses on their role in leading climate and sustainability initiatives for their users and communities.
This year’s event runs from Wednesday 21st October to Wednesday 28th October and has the theme “Climate Facts for a greener future: Navigating mis - and disinformation in libraries”.
Navigating climate disinformation
Climate disinformation is the intentional dissemination of false or misleading information related to climate change and climate action. It uses techniques that discredit climate action and claim climate change is not real or human caused, contrary to the findings of over 99% of climate scientists.
The European Commission’s #ClimateFactsMatter campaign has produced a range of resources to combat climate disinformation:
- 5 things you should know: Follow the climate action series
- Myth Busters: The facts on climate and energy
- Climate Clarity Hub: A consolidation of knowledge and expertise on climate mis - and disinformation
- Climate Facts Matter digital handbook: How to spot Climate Disinformation
Lancaster University Library also provides access to a wide range of authoritative resources on climate action and climate change, including GreenFile and Environmental Science and History.
Our activity for Green Libraries Week
Look out for our Climate Awareness Information Trail, a self-guided activity designed to develop participants’ climate literacy and information-evaluation skills. Located around the library, the trail uses interactive challenges to encourage participants to question climate-related claims, assess the reliability of information, and make informed decisions about what they read and share.
You can also sign up for one of our popular Library Skills @ Lancaster sessions on Wednesday 21st October on How to spot Misinformation (and spot the good stuff). The session is hybrid and available both in-person and online. Library Skills @ Lancaster sessions run throughout the year and are designed to help students, researchers and staff to learn information literacy and Open Research skills, develop a critical approach to dealing with information and to make the best use of the physical and digital library.
You’ll find a range of sustainability-focused books on display on the ground floor of the Library during Green Libraries Week and you can explore a range of sustainability-focused online resources via our Subject Guides.
Partner with us on sustainability
We’re keen to work in partnership with our communities around sustainability. Explore the work we’ve undertaken so far, and contact the Library if you’ve got an idea for how you could partner with us in future.
