The Department of Linguistics and English Language (LAEL) in Lancaster is one of the largest linguistics department in the UK, with a range of expertise, active research environment and a strong community of postgraduate students. The department is also among the top linguistics departments in the world as well as in the UK. In the 2023 QS World University rankings by subject, Linguistics at Lancaster was ranked 10th in the world. The department has also consistently ranked in the top 10 in the UK.
