Do I need to know what I want to do before I see the Careers team?
Posted on
Not everyone knows what they want to do with their degree, so you are not alone.
Through our 1-1 Careers Appointments, we can discuss with you the type of skills you have developed throughout your studies, your likes, strengths, what you find challenging and the type of environment you would like to work in for example.
We can help you explore why you chose to study the subject, what you enjoy most about the topic and what is important to you in your future career. For example:
- Salary
- Ease of commute to work
- Work environment
- Creativity
- Able to work independently
- Progression and development
- Making a difference
- Flexibility, e.g. hybrid working
- Location – proximity to friends and family, city/town/rural
This list is not exhaustive, so think about what matters to you.
To help you demonstrate to employers the range of skills you have gained both through your studies and in your free time, you could consider:
- Volunteering
- Undertaking extra-curricular activities such as joining a society or taking part in a particular sport
- Having a part-time job
Doing these activities may also enable you to find out more about what you want to do or the types of environments you would like to work in, in future.
The Careers team can look at various types of careers with you, career planning and moving onto next steps, job websites, how to apply, interview skills and any further career and employability queries you have, whilst also going through our online resources too.
Use us, that is what we are here for, and we are always happy to help!
