My Experience as an Aspiring Journalist Attending the Capital Connections Manchester Trip, with Lancaster University Careers Service

"Hi, my name is Molly Armstrong, and I’m currently completing a Master’s in English Literary Studies. I’m also a GYF student, and the programme has enhanced my career search, and professional skills. I commence my dream role in journalism this September, and believe the GYF project was an immense help in my job-hunt."

As a current MA Literary Studies student at Lancaster University, I’ve always had a deep passion for storytelling and the media industry. From an early age, I was captivated by the power of journalism to inform, influence, and inspire. However, as I progressed through my academic studies, I often found myself wondering how to bridge the gap between university and the fast-paced world of media. Balancing rigorous coursework with the pursuit of industry experience felt daunting at times. That’s why when the opportunity to join Capital Connections arose, a fully funded networking experience organised by the university’s Careers Service through the GROW Your Future team, I knew I had to apply!

Looking back now, I can confidently say that getting involved in Capital Connections was one of the most rewarding and transformative decisions I’ve made during my time at Lancaster. It not only helped clarify my professional aspirations but played a pivotal role in securing my upcoming role as a journalism apprentice with the BBC, starting this September.

I first discovered Capital Connections through the Grow Your Future Teams space. The programme immediately caught my eye, particularly its focus on connecting students with professionals in the creative and media sectors. I was eager to gain a behind-the-scenes look at the industry, listen to personal career stories, and most importantly, learn how to navigate professional environments with confidence and purpose.

The support from the Careers team was invaluable from the outset. The application process itself was a learning experience, I was guided in refining my interview technique using the STAR method, and I had the chance to practice through tools like Interview360, which provided tailored, AI-driven feedback. These tools challenged me to reflect on my strengths and experiences more critically and ultimately helped me build the confidence to communicate my story more effectively.

The two-day programme took us to very impressive organisations, including McCann, THG, Forvis Mazars, and Deloitte. One particular highlight for me was our visit to Forvis Mazars in Manchester. As someone preparing to step into a journalism role, it was fascinating to see how firms like Forvis Mazars operate within the financial and business sectors. Understanding the corporate world and how it intersects with journalism gave me a deeper appreciation for the role of investigative reporting and economic literacy in producing meaningful news content.

"What stood out most throughout the experience was the clarity and motivation I gained. Just as importantly, I met other students who shared similar ambitions, we supported each other, exchanged ideas, and left the experience with a renewed sense of purpose and a valuable peer network."

To anyone considering applying to Capital Connections in the future, my message is simple, go for it! It’s more than just a career exploration trip, its an opportunity for personal growth, professional development, and self-discovery. You’ll leave not only with industry insights but with greater confidence in your own narrative and capabilities. I’m incredibly grateful to the Lancaster Careers team and everyone involved in making Capital Connections a reality. As I prepare to begin this exciting chapter, I do so with gratitude, clarity, and an eagerness to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way.
