Recognition-based approaches have already been identified as promising research perspectives in the study of inclusion and equity in higher education. This seminar will outline a theoretical model based on Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition. The model, as per Honneth’s account, conceptualises individual autonomy as an intersubjective matter and treats it as a precondition for equal participation. Qualitative data from my ongoing doctoral research project will be presented to illustrate and explain some empirical manifestations of the forms of recognition – love, respect, and social esteem – as they are observed in the experience of first- and second-year students of various social origin in Bulgarian state higher education institutions.

Asen V. Dimitrov is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and team member of the “Dynamics of Inequalities in Participation in Higher and Adult Education: A Comparative Social Justice Perspective” research project, funded by the Bulgarian Science Fund. Dimitrov holds an MA in Comparative Education from the UCL Institute of Education. His research interests include topics in the sociology and philosophy of higher education, in particular issues of social justice, academic freedom, and the academic profession.
