Towards a relational ethics of trust in Higher Education
Higher education researchers often use qualitative, storytelling, and participatory methods to unearth rich, layered, and compelling accounts of human experiences. This is because we are interested in the ways in which individuals see and experience the world, as well as how they interpret the meaning of their experiences. But in the interest of completing projects on time, we build fleeting relationships between ourselves and gatekeepers, or between ourselves and research participants. When this happens, there is not enough time to get to know research participants well, nor is there enough time to establish trust; or to repair it when it is broken. In this seminar, I reflect on the importance of centring trust in research relationships and discuss why doing so matters for epistemic justice.
