The new Moodle Module template design provides significant usability improvements for all learners, providing a more inclusive and accessible learning environment, particularly benefiting neurodiverse students as follows.
Consistent and structured layout
Each module now follows a uniform structure, with key information—such as module information and assessment details—accessible via clearly labelled buttons at the top of the page. This eliminates the need to scroll through disorganized content.
Autistic learners benefit from predictable, low-distraction layouts that reduce cognitive load and anxiety. Dyspraxic learners gain from intuitive navigation and consistent button placement, which supports coordination and interaction with the digital interface and reduces frustration.
Centralised module information
All essential module information, assessment details, announcements and library resources are available via quick link buttons at the top of the main Moodle page on each module. The module information page also contains contact information and accessibility statement for the module contents.
This centralised information supports executive functioning challenges common in ADHD and Autism by reducing the steps needed to locate critical information and provides predictable layout for autistic learners to find information needed across all their modules.
Simplified, cleaner design
Content is organized into weekly segments with a clean, minimalist design using a readable sans-serif font.
Neurodiverse learners often experience cognitive fatigue. A simplified layout reduces the need to interpret complex or inconsistent structures, and less clutter means fewer distractions. Autistic and ADHD learners experience reduced sensory overload and improved focus. Dyslexic learners benefit from improved readability and reduced visual clutter. Dyspraxic learners find it easier to navigate and interact with content due to clearer visual hierarchy.
Enhanced navigation tools
A streamlined navigation menu allow learners to jump directly to relevant sections for specific content.
The consistent design across all modules will help Autistic learners find information more easily. ADHD learners benefit from flexible, non-linear access to materials. Having easy to use navigation enables neurodiverse learners to engage with content in a way that suits their cognitive rhythm.
Progress tracking and reminders
Visual indicators show task completion status, and ‘due soon’ reminders highlight upcoming deadlines.
This feature is especially helpful for ADHD learners, who may struggle with time management and task initiation. It also supports Autistic learners by reinforcing routines and expectations.
