LIRA Invited Seminar - ESA: The rise of artificial intelligence for space applications
The talk is organised as a "showcase" in which Pierre-Philippe gives the overview and several of their research fellows focus on specific topics.
Speakers: Dr Pierre-Philippe Mathieu and his team (European Space Agency)
Title: The rise of artificial intelligence for space applications
Abstract: The ESA Φ-lab aims to accelerate the future of Earth Observation (EO) by operating as a "catalyst" for EO innovative ideas and transformative technologies. AI for Earth Observation (AI4EO) focuses on harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the vast amount of EO data now available, and it is the Φ-lab initiative to exploit the great potential of AI that is still largely untapped. While today the new boost of AI4EO is mainly related to Computer Vision applied to high-resolution satellite imagery, there are many other areas for Earth Science, prediction and big data analytics that could benefit from AI. In particular, Deep Learning is pushing AI to new levels beyond human performance. This talk will give an overview of the current successes and challenges of AI for Space Applications and present a few methodological use-cases which will lead to impactful Earth observation applications, from self-supervised learning to neuromorphic learning.
