Under the auspices of the LUMS Investors in Excellence funding scheme, we are pleased to offer three doctoral studentships, funded by our global alumni. Research proposals should address any aspect of the UN sustainable development goals, although we are particularly interested in topics relating to sustainability, social justice and innovation in place.

Our Responsible Research Agenda

Responsibility is nothing new to LUMS. Throughout our 50-year-plus history, we have recognized the importance of playing a role that expands beyond the boundaries of academia and theoretical research. All that we do in LUMS, from the highest-calibre teaching to supporting hundreds of businesses to succeed, is underpinned by our strong research foundations and constantly evolving, forward-thinking research initiatives. This includes purposeful capacity building through the development and support of top-quality doctoral candidates.

We are stewards of responsible practice, and it is our commitment to society and the future generation to engage in challenge-led research that has real-world impact: shaping and influencing government policy; boosting our economy by supporting businesses both regionally and globally; developing future leaders that are advocates of sustainable business that will challenge convention, champion good practice and address key challenges. We are proud to house diverse research centres, each with their own focus on key societal and business issues, as well as the Work Foundation – a London-based think tank at the forefront of good work for more than a hundred years. We apply the very latest thinking to tackling today’s global challenges, and are seeking highly motivated doctoral candidates, with an excellent first degree and outstanding Masters level degree performance to join us in these endeavours.

In support of our responsible research agenda, and the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, our Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business examines key environmental issues, delivering world-class transdisciplinary research and undertaking engagement to support and advance the mainstreaming of social and environmental sustainability into purposeful business strategy and performance. Their research covers a wide range of issues including sustainable food systems, ocean stewardship, waste and the circular economy, accounting for responsible decision-making, responsible leadership, environmental governance, the making of moral markets, and human rights issues and environmental sustainability in the supply chain. In these and other projects, we work alongside industry leaders to address areas of growing concern to business and the wider society, and are looking for top quality doctoral students whose research will contribute to these important initiatives.

Studentship Details

Full-time studentships will commence in October 2022 for research proposals that align with the responsible research agenda outlined above and that will enhance the research reputation of the School. We are interested in inter-disciplinary or cross-departmental research proposals, but will also consider proposals that align with a single department or discipline (see our doctoral web pages for details). All studentships pay a generous living allowance in line with ESRC studentship awards (2021 ESRC award was £15,285 per annum) and offer a fee waiver for three or four years, depending upon the discipline norm.
